City inks contract with public works employees

    The Clear Lake City Council has approved a new three-year contract with public works department employees.
    The Council voted unanimously Monday, July 2, to a wage increase of 1.75 percent each July 1 and a 1.5 percent wage increase each Jan. 1 of the contract, July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015.

Investigation continues into accident

    Three people were injured while exiting a carnival ride Monday in Clear Lake City Park.
    At 4:12 p.m. Clear Lake police responded to a call that three individuals were injured at “The Hurricane” ride, owned by Evans United Shows.  When officers arrived it was discovered that the persons were on the ride

Local officials help to send meth dealer to prison for 30 years

 A California man who conspired to distribute methamphetamine in Iowa was sentenced Friday to 30 years in federal prison.
    Shawn Jones, 42, from San Diego, Calif., received the prison term after a Jan. 19, 2012, jury verdict finding him guilty of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.  Jones was previously convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana in the United States District Court Southern District of California in 2006.

Lions end season with five conference wins; top Mohawks

The Clear Lake baseball team set the stage for an exciting finish to the conference season by picking up five league wins, along with two non-conference victories, last week.  The Lions are now 27-4, 12-2 in North Central Conference play, and rated No. 4 in Class 3A.  

Clear Lake softball team drops six games

The Clear Lake girls came out on the short end of six games in the past week, falling to 2-23.  This week the team was scheduled to wrap up the regular season by hosting Webster City on Monday, July 2.  They begin the post-season Thursday, July 5, with Regional play at Charles City. The Lions will face Decorah in a 7 p.m. game.

Fireworks barge launch must be changed

    The low lake level has caused officials at the Chamber of Commerce to alter their usual plans for launching fireworks barges into Clear Lake Wednesday.
    Fourth of July Chairperson Alice Hanley explained the Chamber’s five barges used to shoot off fireworks over the lake July 4 cannot use the lake access at 17th Avenue

    Mike Monson, 65, of Altoona, Iowa, passed away at his home on Monday, June 18, 2012. 
    He was born Nov. 23, 1946 in Ventura, Iowa.
