     Darlene A. Bohn, 87, of Ventura died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, east of Garner, Iowa, with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.   

Clear Lake to host Mason City in season opener

 

Clear Lake’s football rivalry with Mason City will resume this Friday, Aug. 30, with the Lions hosting the Mohawks in a 7:30 p.m. game.  Ninth grade teams will play at 5 p.m.  

In 2012, the Lions won bragging rights in their first meeting on the football field with Mason City after 82 years. Clear Lake broke open a scoreless game though two quarters with 34 points in the second half. 

  An estimated 6,000 fans watched the Lions post a 34-7 win at Mohawk Field.

The lake level measured 

-0.84” below the weir according to officials at the Water Treatment Plant.  Last year at this time the lake measured -23.40” below the weir.

Clear Lake remembers ‘Big Bopper Jr.’

 

J.P. Richardson Jr., son of one of the three rock-and-roll legends who were killed in a 1959 plane crash near Clear Lake after performing at the Surf Ballroom, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Katy, Texas “after a long, hard fight,” according to his father’s website.

Richardson, 54, had a heart pump installed in June.

Two file nomination papers for at-large Council seat

 

Two candidates for an at-large position on the Clear Lake City Council filed nomination papers with the Clear Lake City Clerk on Monday, the first day to declare candidacy.

Peter Lagios and Gary Hugi are seeking the position being vacated by Terry Unsworth.  Unsworth, who also once served as the Ward 2 representative on the Council, announced last week he would not seek re-election.

Lagios was born in Mason City, has travelled extensively across the United States and returned to North Iowa in 2005 settling in Clear Lake.

Meet the candidates for Ventura School Board

 

Voters will go to the polls Tuesday, Sept. 10, to participate in Regular School Elections.  Two board positions will be filled in Clear Lake and Ventura.

Lillie Keith was the lucky winner in the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter’s Recipe Contest drawing.  Publisher Mike 

Finnegan presented Keith with a KitchenAid mixer following a drawing from all those who submitted recipes for the upcoming Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter Cookbook.  The cookbook will be available in time for the holidays.  -Reporter photo

Clear Lake places three on All-State Teams

 

The Iowa Baseball Coaches Association has named three Clear Lake players to its All-State Team. 

Gavin Sheakley was selected as a pitcher on the Elite Super Team and Jerry Kockler and Mitch Keeran were named to the Second Team as a pitcher and outfielder respectively.
