Decorah tops Lions in District action

    The season came to an end last week for the Clear Lake softball team.  After dropping their final regular season game to Webster City, Decorah topped the Lions in the opening round of District play Friday. 
    The Lions finished the season with a 2-25 record.

Bicycle racing takes over the town; Zirbel wins Criterium race

   Clear Lake’s Fourth of July fireworks gave way to bicycle racing excitement Saturday and Sunday. 
    Professional cyclist Tom Zirbel said he was motivated by friends and family from his hometown and he came from behind to win the Iowa State Criterium Championship race through downtown Saturday night.  Zirbel, a professional racer with the Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies Team, came from the second pack of racers with nine laps to go to


Lions end season with five conference wins; top Mohawks

The Clear Lake baseball team set the stage for an exciting finish to the conference season by picking up five league wins, along with two non-conference victories, last week.  The Lions are now 27-4, 12-2 in North Central Conference play, and rated No. 4 in Class 3A.  
    The Lions  rank second in Class 3A in team batting average, and have individual players in the top five in key statistics: Ozzie Adams third in batting average at .515); RBI’s, Tanner Truesdell second with 44; runs scored,


Clear Lake softball team drops six games

The Clear Lake girls came out on the short end of six games in the past week, falling to 2-23.  This week the team was scheduled to wrap up the regular season by hosting Webster City on Monday, July 2.  They begin the post-season Thursday, July 5, with Regional play at Charles City. The Lions will face Decorah in a 7 p.m. game.

    Hampton-Dumont broke open a 4-1 game in the sixth inning with a string of hits which produced two runs in the sixth and seventh for an 8-1 win.
    “We had several excellent defensive plays, several girls diving for catches or stops.  Despite our eight hits, we just couldn’t get our runners around,” said Coach Nicki Petersburg.
