Four Clear Lake wrestlers qualify for State

Four Clear Lake wrestlers have punched their ticket to State.  Ryan Schmalen, Andres Gonzalez, Brice Wilcke and Connor Nosbisch all qualified for State wrestling, which begins Thursday evening at 7 p.m. 

“They did a great job!” said head Coach Gary Weber following Saturday’s District meet at Hampton.  “We ran into Jim Miller, Wartburg’s wrestling coach, before the  meet and his advice to the boys was just to fight. They did that at all six weights.”

   

Wins prepare Lions for road ahead

Coach Bart Smith feels, with post-season play beginning Saturday, his Lions team is peaking at just the right time.  Clear Lake chalked up three more wins last week, pushing their record to 17-4.  The Lions will take their first step on the tournament trail Saturday, Feb. 16.  They will host the winner of the Charles City vs. Decorah game played on Wednesday, Feb. 13.  Clear Lake’s victories this week included a four-point win over Charles City. 

   

Cards move one step closer with win

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls wrapped up their regular season and took one step closer to a State berth with a tournament win in the first round of Regional play Saturday.  The Cardinals face Osage in the next round of Regionals tonight at 7 p.m. in Osage.  Osage topped Forest City, 60-29, in the first round.  The winner of Wednesday’s game will play on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in Algona, where they 

   

Lions finish season in a tie for second in NCC

The Clear Lake boys pushed their game to extremes last week, winning in a thrilling overtime then dropping two games.  A loss to Humboldt left the Lions in a tie for second in the North Central Conference final standings with the Wildcats.  Both teams finished 13-5; Iowa Falls-Alden captured the NCC title with a 16-2 mark.  Following a regular season finale against Mason City Tuesday night, the Lions begin tournament play against Gilbert (11-10)
