Sine 1999 the Cardinal volleyball team has been 0-76 against powerhouse Lake Mills. But on Tuesday, Sept. 18, that streak ended as G-H/V won set two, 25-21, in a four game match.
After losing set one, 25-18, the Cards found some confidence to compete in set two. G-H/V stuck with the Bulldogs. Lake Mills called a time out when they were trailing, 21-16. Hannah Hutcheson served up an ace following the time out to stretch the lead to 22-16 before a side-out kept Lake Mills in the game. Two aggressive kills at the net put the Cardinals up 24-17. The Bulldogs then went on a run and pulled to within three, 24-21, before G-H/V scored one more for the win.
“With our passing we were getting big swings at the net and we were excited after every point,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt. “Emily (Mathews) was phenomenal in this set. She was getting great passing from her teammates and setter Courtney (Younge) had the offense clicking.”
In set three the Cardinals matched the Bulldogs point for point resulting in a tie at 21-21, but Lake Mills pulled off a set three victory, 25-22. Set four was all Lake Mills, as they coasted to the win, 25-13.
“It was obviously disappointing to run out of gas at the end of the match, but we’ll never hang our heads after the way we played tonight,” said Schmidt.
Mathews led the team in three categories. She collected 28 kills, two ace serves, 21 digs and eight blocks.
Shelby Rayhons had seven kills, Dasi Larson collected six and Hannah Hutcheson had five kills.
Miranda Frederick had 19 digs for the evening, while Rayhons had 17 and Hutcheson 10.
