Clear Lake scored early and often and its defense was smothering on the way to a 42-0 Homecoming victory over Waverly-Shell Rock Friday night. The win improved the Lions to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Class 3A District action. The Go-
Hawks dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the district.
“We made big strides this week and I’m really proud of the kids,” said Head Coach Fred Wieck. The team leader explained the Lions’ fourth outing was really more like a Week Two contest because so many changes were made in the line-up after opening the season 1-1. While the personnel is the same, positions have changed for many players.
Among those settling into his new spot is quarterback turned running back Chase Lester. The junior led the Lions’ powerful ground game Friday with 88 yards on 14 carries. Carter Hand had 15 carries for 70 yards and Cody Maulsby picked up 48 yards on 17 carries, leading Clear Lake to a 215-75 advantage over W-SR in rushing.
Sophomore quarterback Brock Adams was 7/10 passing for 93 yards. Touchdown passes of 25-yards were completed to Lester and Luke Schiller. Hand also had a 37 yard reception and Gavin Sheakley caught one pass for six yards. Adams also picked up 10 yards on the ground in seven carries.
Clear Lake’s defense set the tone for the night quickly. The Lions forced the Go-Hawks to go three and out on their opening possession. Sheakley returned the Go-Hawk punt to midfield and just eight plays later the Lions were in the endzone. Hand ran the ball in from the five for the first of two touchdowns he would score on the night. Logan Kracht added the first of his six extra points scored in the game and the lead was 7-0 Lions with just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Another three and out for W-SR gave the Lions the ball again on the opponents’ 42. Helped by an off-sides call against the Go-Hawks on fourth and two at the 27, the Lions steadily moved the ball in for another score when Adams hit Lester on an 11 yard TD pass with 1:57 remaining in the quarter, 14-0.
