The Clear Lake volleyball team opened its season with a full slate of matches last week.
Tuesday, the Lions hosted North Butler and Central Springs. Although they captured games, the Lions were 0-2 in match play. Thursday, Clear Lake bounced back with vengeance and swept Eagle Grove 3-0.
Clear Lake started play Tuesday against North Butler. The Bearcats won the match, 2-1, with scores of 25-18, 20-25, 15-13.
It was another close match with Central Springs. The Lions won the first game, 25-20, but dropped the next two, 17-25 and 11-15.
On the evening, CLHS was lead by Kaitlyn Pitzen with 14 kills. She was joined by her teammate Carly Ouverson with 28 assists as a setter.
“The girls were very competitive and gave a great effort all night long,” said Coach Scott Swenson. “If we eliminate some of the mental errors, we can become a very good volleyball team.”
Swenson noted this outing was the first varsity action for all of the players since the Lions graduated all of its starting line-up from a year ago. Just one senior letterwinner returns this year for the team. “I was very proud of the competitive fire they showed. We, as a coaching staff, are very excited about this team.”
North Butler won the triangular by also topping Central Spring, 2-1.
