Four Cards take top honors at GT/RA Tournament

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team had a tough outing at Nashua-Plainfield, but bounced back to claim second place at the Graettinger-Terril Tournament.

The Cardinals dropped three matches at Nashua Plainfield on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

“Coming off a long break you never know how you will wrestle that first time out,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “I felt we started a little sluggish with Forest City and then got better as the night went on.”

Forest City topped the Cardinals 63-18 in the first match of the night.   A.J. Arnold finally got the Cardinals on the board in the 132-pound match with a pin against Derrick Wubben in 1:28.  The only other pin for the Cards came from Connor Shaw at 152-pounds.  He pinned Landon Josten in 4:00.  Dalton Basinger received a forfeit for the remaining GHV points.  Forest City collected eight pins in the win over the Cardinals.

The second match of the night saw GHV falling to St. Ansgar, 54-24. Arnold again got the Cardinals rolling at 132 pounds with a pin over Ethan Mayer in :49.  Tucker Datema, at 160-pounds, pinned Jacob Hemann in 4:23.  Nic Tusha also picked up a pin at 220-pounds in 2:10 against Jacob Pierce.

Despite a great effort by the Cardinals in the final bout of the night, Nashua-Plainfield came away with a 48-33 win.  The match started strong at 220-pounds where Nic Tusha pinned Bryce Bilharz in 1:28.  The Cardinals received a forfeit at 106-pounds.  The next GHV win came from Arnold.  He pinned Shane Usher in 5:35.  Colby Reid also picked up a pin at 145-pounds against Ashton Bloomquist in 1:03.  Shaw collected a pin against Dylan Jones in :54.  The final points were scored by Datema who won a 9-3 decision against Austin Pitz.

“We made little mistakes that cost us and ended up with us getting pinned, which we need to fix,” said Smith.
