Long week of softball for Cardinals

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team endured a long week, dropping eight games.
Newman 9, G-H/V 1
The Cards opened the week against the always-tough Newman Knights. Newman pitcher Becca Huberty threw a one-hitter, helping her team to a 9-1 victory. Tiera Van Gerpen recorded the only hit for G-H/V.
Taylor Reising took the loss for the Cardinals. She gave up six hits, walked four and struck out one in three
innings. Brooklyn Ossman came in to throw the next three innings and struck out two. The Knights got one hit off her.

Lake Mills 13, G-H/V 3
The Cardinals started out strong against Lake Mills Wednesday, June 19, but couldn’t match the Bulldogs’ offense over seven innings. Lake Mills posted a 13-3 victory.
The Bulldogs posted three runs in the top of the first, but G-H/V responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Autumn Weaver reached base on an error and was advanced on a base hit by Tiara Van Gerpen. Both players scored on a hit by Grace Tusha.
In the seventh, Miranda Jackson gave the Cards their final run. She reached base on a single and was moved around the basepaths on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Weaver and a hit from Van Gerpen.
Mallory Van Oort and Tusha also had two hits in the game. Brooklyn Ossman had one hit. Ossman also pitched one inning, giving up two hits and walking one.
Taylor Reising was the losing pitcher. Lake Mills tallied 13 hits and 11 runs off her. She walked one.
N-K 7, G-H/V 6
Northwood-Kensett manufactured one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals Thursday, June 20.
The Vikings had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but G-H/V responded with one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth for a 4-3 lead.
