The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team competed in a tournament at Lake Mills on Saturday, June 1.

Central Springs 12, G-H/V 1

The Cardinals opened the Lake Mills tournament by facing Central Springs.  The Panthers rolled to a 12-1 victory.

G-H/V scored its lone run in the sixth inning when Grace Tusha knocked her sister, Maddie Tusha, in for the run.

Grace Tusha led the batting effort with two hits.  Getting one hit apiece were Maddie Tusha, Brooklyn Ossman and Tiara Van Gerpen.

“I have challenged the girls to push themselves at the plate and to swing at good pitches,” said Coach Christina Weiser.

Brooklyn Ossman took the loss for the team.  She pitched five innings, giving up six hits and 10 runs.  She had five earned runs, walked 10 batters and struck out three.  Sydney Childress pitched one inning.  She gave up two earned runs, and walked five.

N-K 5, G-H/V 4

It was a much closer game on Saturday when the Cards faced Northwood-Kensett.

N-K came out firing on all cylinders in the first inning, collecting four runs.  The Vikings put one more run on the board in the third inning before the Cardinal defense picked it up and held the team scoreless for the remainder of the game.  G-H/V plugged away at the score, scoring one run in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough, as N-K collected the 5-4 victory.

“We are starting to put things together now,” said Coach Christina Weiser.

Taylor Reising pitched the entire game for the Cardinals.  She gave up nine hits and five runs.  She walked two batters and struck out five.

“The pitchers struggled in the first game, but I challenged Taylor to make the batters put the ball into play and she did a great job of that,” said Weiser.

Maddie Tusha led the offensive effort, going 4-4 at the plate.  She also scored one run for the Cardinals.

Tiara Van Gerpen, Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Kylee Datema also scored runs for G-H/V.

Getting one hit apiece were Tiara Van Gerpen, Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Sadhna Ades.
