Lions are a perfect 10 in NCC action

The Clear Lake baseball team is a perfect 10.  Make that a perfect 10-0 in the North Central Conference.
The Lions, who moved up in the ratings to the number eight position in Class 3A, improved to 17-4 overall and 10-0 in the conference during another very successful week.

“We have been working hard to improve our game defensively and we are starting to see the results of those efforts on a more consistent basis,” said Coach Seth Thompson.  “To only have three team errors in five games is a huge improvement from where we were defensively a few weeks ago.”

The Lions started the week by shutting out Humboldt in an NCC doubleheader played Monday, June 13.  The Lions won by scores of 5-0 and 10-0.
“It was great to see us win these games with our defense and pitching after a week prior where our offense carried us,” said Coach Seth Thompson.  “We got to see the top two pitchers Humboldt has, which I think is a good thing for us as this season progresses because seeing good pitching helps us see where we have weaknesses at the plate individually and as a team.”
Humboldt also saw some quality pitching from Clear Lake’s Elliott Neuberger and Gavin Sheakley.  Neuberger struck out five in the first game and Sheakley had nine strikeouts in the second game.  Neither Lion pitcher issued a walk.   Humboldt managed just two hits off Neuberger and three from Sheakley.
“Our offense though was able to put some runs on the board early in both games, which I felt put pressure on Humboldt’s offense that our pitchers were able to take advantage of,” said Coach Thompson, adding that the Lion defense only recorded one error on the night.
The Lions got on the board with single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings.  Two more in the sixth yielded the 5-0 score.
Six different Lions collected Clear Lake’s six hits in the first game. Four walks also helped to put the Lions on the base paths.
In game two, Tanner Tusha pounded out three hits, including a double, and three others had two hits apiece in a 10-0 win.  Tusha picked up three RBI in the game.  Tanner Truesdell, Zac Bendickson and Austin Kessler were each two-for-four at the plate.

The Lions scored early and often at Clarion-Goldfield Wednesday, June 15.  Clear Lake put 15 runs on the scoreboard before their hosts even had a chance to bat.
“When you have a balanced offense like we have, batters one through nine, you can really put some big numbers up in innings pretty quick, as we saw tonight and seen throughout this year a number of times,” said Coach Thompson.
Colin Lobdell’s homerun in the first inning seemed to really deflate Clarion, which had already given up 12 runs in the inning.
Tanner Truesell also had a homerun in the contest.  The junior scored three runs himself and and had seven RBI in the four-inning game.
Ozzie Adams picked up three hits in the game and scored twice.  Michael Keeran, Tanner Tusha and Jake Kockler each had two hits, with Tusha and Kockler each getting - Read More Via e-Edition
