 G-H/V vs. Osage

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Cardinals fell to Osage, 3-0.

A flat start by the Cardinals led to Osage jumping to an early advantage in set one on their way to a 25-14 win.

G-H/V regained some composure in the second set and stayed within three points for the majority of the set.  A

time-out was called with Osage leading, 21-18.  The Cardinals couldn’t close the gap and dropped that set, 25-18.

“We were getting good looks at the net, but I give Osage credit, they wouldn’t let the ball hit the ground,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.

The Cardinals came out strong in set three and jumped to a 12-7 lead behind the strong hitting of junior Emily Mathews and four great digs by reserve player Mallory Van Oort.  Mathews nailed eight of her team high 13 kills in the final set.  G-H/V retained the lead at 18-12 and again at 23-15, before the Green Devils launched a comeback and brought the game down to the wire.  Osage won the set, 27-25.

“This was a huge learning experience for us,” said Schmidt.  “We stopped being aggressive and it cost us.”

Mathews led the team in kills with 13.  Courtney Younge recorded three, while Hannah Hutcheson and Shelby Rayhons each picked up two.

Younge led the team in assists with 15 and also in digs, with a team high 12.  Miranda Frederick had 11 digs, followed by Mathews and Bethany Nannenga with 10 apiece and Hutcheson added eight digs.

Mathews had five blocks and Sola Stephenson had three.
