Week of ups and downs for CL softball team

The Clear Lake girls earned a non-conference win during a busy week.  The Lions topped RRMR Tuesday, June 7, but the win was sandwiched by losses to North Central Conference teams, leaving the Lions 3-7 overall.

    The Lions started the week with a doubleheader at home against Eagle Grove.  The home team was in a hole heading into the final frame, as the Eagles scored three in the fifth and seventh innings.  The Lions rallied to cut the score in half, but were defeated in the first game, 6-3. 
    “I was happy with our late rally, but the seventh inning is too late,” said Coach Nicki Petersburg.
    Seniors Rea Faber and Emma Schiller each had two hits in the game. Megan Loux, Annie Snyder and Ryan Pierce scored runs for the Lions.  Loux picked up an RBI.
    Taylor Diehl pitched a complete game, giving up only one hit, but walking six.  She struck out seven.

    In game two, the Eagles started the game with three runs and the Lions responded with two.  The teams kept it close for a couple more innings, but seven Lion errors were the difference. Again, the Lions rallied and scored three runs in the seventh, but again it was too little, two late.
    Clear Lake had five hits in the game, but no player had more than one.  Hannah Bartlett stole two bases and scored two runs.  Taylor Diehl, Rea Faber and Kaitlyn Pitzen all scored, with Ryan Pierce earning two RBI and Pitzen Schiller and Diehl all finishing with one.

    Rockford took an early lead with runs in the second and fifth innings, but this time the Lions rallied with success.  They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-2 lead, then came back again to score three in the seventh for the win.
    “Our girls never gave up and the bottom of the line-up finally got the hits we’d been waiting for all season,” said Coach Petersburg.  “They came through with five consecutive singles, scoring four runs to win with only one out.  I was the proudest I’d been all season after that game.”
    A trio of Lions had three hits apiece in the game.  Hannah Bartlett, Rea Faber and Rachel Kopriva all reached base three times, with Kopriva’s triple bringing in two runs.  Taylor Diehl and Ryan Pierce each had two hits, with Pierce getting two RBI.  The bottom of the order, Kaitlyn Pitzen, Emma Schiller and Annie Snyder got their singles in the seventh.
