Season is off and running for Clear Lake and G-H/V/WH teams
DiMarco takes top spot in boy’s race
Cross County is often considered an individual sport. But Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock runners demonstrated the team-concept behind the sport and succeeded both individually and as teams at the Newman Catholic Invitational held Tuesday, Aug. 28, on the west campus of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Antonio DiMarco won the boys varsity competition in a time of 17:05. G-H/V/WH’s Joel Toppin was third in 17:15
Clear Lake’s Jake Iverson was fifth in 17:22. Rounding out the scoring for the Lions was Alex Blum, 21st in 18:44; Alex Enabnit, 25th in 18:56; and Ryan Faught, 26th in 19:00. Also competing was MJ Mixdorf, 68th in 21:25, and Jake Harle, 81st in 22:36.
“The high number of miles that the kids put in over the summer paid off in this meet. It was a true team effort,” said Coach Nick DiMarco. He was pleased to see groups of his runners stick together and systematically overtake runners from other teams.
Chase Smith of G-H/V/WH finished in 10th place with a time of 17:51.
The Lions edged out second place Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock 78 to 80. North Iowa was third in the team standing with 121, followed by Osage with 125 and Mason City with 138.
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock girls took top honors at the meet, finishing with 57 points.The Clear Lake girls were fifth overall in the varsity race.
