Lois Hammond

Lois Evelyn Hammond 92, died Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at her home.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, at the at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Mark Doebel officiating.  A visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Burial took place at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Lois Evelyn Esk was born October 29, 1931, in rural Franklin County the daughter of Luke and Alice M. (Vierkant) Esk. Lois graduated from Meservey High School in the class of 1949, and was honored as the Valedictorian. While in school Lois participated in glee club, drama and lettered in basketball.  

Continuing her education, Lois attended Central College in Pella, receiving her teaching certificate; she taught in elementary education for two years. Other work history included waitressing at Holiday Inn, Seven Nations, Murph’s and Lake Crest. She also ran a small in-home daycare until her retirement.

On June 1, 1952, Lois was united in marriage to Rodney Allen Hammond at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa; they were blessed with four children. Lois and Rodney made their home in Clear Lake.  

Lois was an avid reader, she also enjoyed sewing, embroidery, word search puzzles and watching Westerns. Spending time with family was her greatest love; especially watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow, she was delighted to attend many of their school activities. She was a long-time member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Lois is survived by her children, Deborah Rodemaker, Jacquelyn Hammond, Rita (Wayne) Miller, Steven (Diane) Hammond; grandchildren, Bridget (Allen) Jermeland, Andrew (Samantha) Lewis, Amber Nettifee, Erich (Brooke) Berry, Tyler (Abbigail) Hammond, Erin Hammond, Luke Hammond, Madison Hammond; great-grandchildren, Zachary Jermeland, Jacob Jermeland, Izabelle Lewis, Kyleigh Lewis, Thomas Hammond, and Eleanor Hammond; her brother, Edward (Mary Ellen) Esk; nieces, Verna Jean McCleary and Linda Hancock; along with other relatives and friends. 

Lois was pre-deceased by her parents; husband, Rodney; great-grandson, Kaden Marcus Lewis; sons-in-law, Jerry Pearson, and David Rodemaker.
