Girls sweep Eagle Grove

   The Clear Lake volleyball team opened its season with a full slate of matches last week. 
    Tuesday, the Lions hosted North Butler and Central Springs.  Although they captured games, the Lions were 0-2 in match play.  Thursday, Clear Lake bounced back with vengeance and swept Eagle Grove 3-0.

Tuesday Triangular
    Clear Lake started play Tuesday against North Butler.  The Bearcats won the match, 2-1, with scores of 25-18, 20-25, 15-13. 
    It was another close match with Central Springs.  The Lions won the first game, 25-20, but dropped the next two, 17-25 and 11-15.
    On the evening, CLHS was lead by Kaitlyn Pitzen with 14 kills. She was joined by her teammate Carly Ouverson with 28 assists as a setter.
    “The girls were very competitive and gave a great effort all night long,” said Coach Scott Swenson.  “If we eliminate some of the mental errors, we can become a very good volleyball team.”
    Swenson noted this outing was the first varsity action for all of the players since the Lions graduated all of its starting line-up from a year ago.  Just one senior letterwinner returns this year for the team.   “I was very proud of the competitive fire they showed.  We, as a coaching staff, are very excited about this team.”
    North Butler won the triangular by also topping Central Spring, 2-1.

CL 3, Eagle Grove 0
    The Lions opened North Central Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Eagle Grove Thursday.  Scores were 25-17, 25-8, 25-12.
    Kaitlyn Pitzen again led the team with eight kills and two blocks.  She was  also 6/6 on serves and 3/3 for digs.
    Jeanette Davis had four kills for the Lions, while Taylor Julsen was credited with three.  Jenna Peterson had three kills, was 8/11 on serves and had 11 digs for the night.
