Dorothy M. Moore

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dorothy Mae Moore, age 84, whose infectious laughter and unwavering love for her family illuminated our lives. She peacefully departed this world on Nov. 4, 2023, at the IOOF Home in Mason City, leaving behind a legacy of pure joy and light.

Dorothy’s life was celebrated in a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. The service was led by Mark Doebel, who honored her vibrant spirit. 

Dorothy’s final resting place will be at Zion Reformed Cemetery in rural Chapin. The family kindly requests that memorials be directed to Vickie Diekhuis.

Family and friends paid their respects during the visitation, held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the funeral home. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy Mae Harms, born on April 18, 1939, was the daughter of Ernest and Mary (Freeze) Harms. She received her education and graduated from CAL Community High School. Dorothy dedicated herself to her work, which included roles at Clear Lake Bakery and Oakwood Care Center. She was known for her impeccable work ethic, never missing a day of work in her 55-year career.

Dorothy’s life took an unexpected turn in the year 2000 when she suffered a brain aneurysm, which led to her retirement. She then attended the Salvation Army Adult Day care program for 14 years.

Dorothy’s life mirrored the extraordinary journey of Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz. Born in a snowstorm, she traveled her own yellow brick road, facing challenges with the brain and bravery of The Scarecrow, the compassion and heart of The Tin Man, and the unyielding determination of the original Dorothy with her own crew of munchkins (and even some flying monkeys). She fearlessly confronted every twist and turn, embodying the spirit of Courage until the very end. 

Dorothy’s legacy lives on through her children, Vickie (Dennis) Diekhuis, Alan (Denise Hall) Logan, Michael (Libby) Moore, and Kimberly (Troy O’Dell) Moore. Her love for her children was boundless, and they meant the world to her.

She leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Jake Hansen, Savannah Moore, Ashton Eckenrod (Kameryn Nolte), Micah Logan, Anaya Rankin and Max Welter, as well as her great-granddaughter, Laney Poulin. Dorothy will also be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dorothy was known for her unique expressions, often calling everyone “gaulpets.” Don’t let her catch you “mauzing” or “slomping” on something or you might hear her say “gwachow.” She had a love for road trips, dining out, watching Lori Line, sharing laughs while watching funny YouTube clips and classic comedy movies. 

As we navigate our grief, let us remember the laughter, the love, and the unforgettable moments shared with Dorothy. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will forever reside in our hearts.
