Clear Lake wrestlers record two big NCC wins

The Clear Lake wrestling team traveled to Eagle Grove and came away with two big North Central Conference wins.  The Lions beat Eagle Grove, 66-15, and Hampton, 51-15.
    “We wrestled very well Thursday night. Once again our kids won the third period on conditioning.  Coach Lester does an awesome job getting our kids into shape and it is showing up in the win column,” stated head Coach Gary Weber.

     Winning by pin against Hampton was: Matt Bieber, Carson Farmer, Blake Kelso, Aaron Boeshart, Cain Roth and Logan Kellogg.  Mitchell Jordan, Brennen Doebel and Jacob Baker all won by forfeit.
    The highlight match of the dual was at 170, where Brice Wilcke beat district qualifier Kellen Suntken, 4-3.
    “Brice has been wrestling with Kellogg in practice and doing fairly well, so our staff is expecting a big year out of Brice and is not really surprised at his success,” said Coach Weber.
    Losing by decisions were Ryan Schmalen, Connor Nosbisch and John Glynn.
    “Schmalen moved up to 113 for the team and gave up 14 pounds. That is a big sacrifice for the team and he wrestled well but was just out sized. We are proud of him,” added the coach.  “Cain Roth recorded his first varsity win with a pin at 182 pounds. Cain gave up 20 pounds and came away with a nice win to help the team.”
     Against Eagle Grove, the Lions came away with nine pins. Ryan Schmalen, Brennen Doebel,  Matt Bieber, Blake Kelso, Jacob Baker, Aaron Boeshart, Connor Nosbisch, John Glynn and Brice Wilcke all had falls.  Cain Roth and Logan Kellogg both received forfeits.
    “This team is really impressing our staff. Both Doebel and Roth gave up over 20 pounds to fill in and help out the team so we have a full line up. Everybody is working hard and we are having a blast,” stated Weber.
 
Dick Kennedy Duals
    On Saturday, Clear Lake traveled to Webster City for the Dick Kennedy duals. The Lions had to wrestle two ranked teams in Ankeny and Webster City. The Lions nearly pulled a huge upset, but lost 34-33 to Webster City.
    “Once again, our kids gave it their best shot. They are an amazing group of young men that we are all proud of,” said Coach Weber.  “We do not measure our success in wins and losses, but in effort, so we feel we went 3-0 on Saturday.”
    The Lions dropped a 54-9 decision to Ankeny, but bounced back and won 69-6 over Belmond-Klemme.
