CL girls pick up first win of the season

    The Clear Lake girls picked up their first win of the season, treating the home crowd to a 57-33 win over Eagle Grove Friday, Dec. 2.  The team readied for the game with a tough outing against North Central Conference power Algona on Tuesday, Nov. 29.  The Bulldogs topped the Lions, 51-31.

ALGONA 51, CL 29    
    Algona held the Lions scoreless in the first two minutes of their meeting Tuesday at Algona.  The slow start, coupled with early turnovers, put the Lions in a hole they weren’t able to climb out of and they were defeated 51-29.
    “The game was closer then the score indicated,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “It was a six point game in the middle of fourth quarter and we had a few chances to cut into the lead, but didn’t capitalize on their mistakes.  I felt like we
had a run in us to cut the lead and gain some momentum but we just came up short.”
    The young Lions received balanced scoring from their line-up.  Sophomore Logan Anderson paced the team with eight points.  She sunk four of four free throw attempts to boost her score.  Another sophomore, Trudy Peterson, put in five points for the Lions, while juniors Kristen Hewett and Megan Loux, along withs senior Meg Monson had four points apiece.  Hannah Bartlett and Kaitlyn Pitzen had two points each.
    Hewett was the leading rebounder with five. 
    “I was pleased with our girls’ effort and how they continued to fight and battle for four quarters.  Algona is a good team and we played with them for three and a half quarters.  We are doing some good things as a team.  Our defense is a positive we can take from this game,” said Coach Smith.  “The mistakes we are making are correctable and I feel very confident that our girls will work to improve on our ball security and rebounding.  We will build on this game and improve on these things for our next game.”

    The old adage that the best offense is a good defense rang true for the Clear Lake girls Friday night. 
    The Lions were cold shooting from the floor-- making just 27 of 93 shot attempts, but 17 steals and all around hustle provided the team with a win over Eagle Grove, 57-33.
    “I was very happy with our shot selection.  We took good shots, but they just didn’t fall for us,” said Coach Smith.   “We just couldn’t seem to put the ball in the bucket.”
