Cardinals move record to 11-3

 

It was a busy week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team, as they competed in matches on Tuesday, Thursday and a tournament on Saturday.

G-H/V vs. West Hancock

The Cardinals topped West Hancock in three games on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 25-15, 25-12 and 25-19.

“We were passing the ball well and our offense was very effective,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.

Coach Schmidt credited strong serving efforts by Emily Mathews, Shelby Rayhons and Courtney Younge as being major factors in the G-H/V victory.  Mathews recorded three of her four ace serves in set one.  Rayhons was the leader in set two, going 8/8 with three ace serves.  Younge nailed three of her four ace serves in set three.

Mathews led the team in many categories.  She collected 20 kills, had eight digs and recorded four blocked shots.  Younge also had a strong night with three kills, 23 assists, two blocks and seven digs.

Hannah Hutcheson recorded four kills and she had six digs.

 

G-H/V vs. North Iowa

It was a tough start for the G-H/V volleyball team on Thursday, Sept. 6, when they faced North Iowa.  The Cards dropped a very close first set to the Bison, but turned it around and went on to win the next three.

The first set was a battle, with the score being tied eight times.  At the end it was point for point, but the Bison were able to string two points together to win the set, 28-26.

“The next three sets were a complete turnaround as we dominated at the net and the service line,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.

Miranda Frederick served the Cards to a 7-0 lead before a Bison time-out in the second set.  Emily Mathews also had three big kills in the set for a commanding 25-8 victory.  They went on to take the next two sets, 25-11 and 25-16.

Coach Schmidt praised the play of Hannah Hutcheson who was 23/23 for 100 percent passing.

 

Belmond-Klemme Tourney

The Cardinals finished in second place at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament held on Saturday, Sept. 8.

In pool play, G-H/V defeated Hampton-Dumont, 2-1; they lost to Iowa Falls/Alden, 1-2; and defeated West Hancock, 2-0.  They advanced to the semi-finals where they defeated West Fork, 2-0 by scores of 21-10 and 21-15.  The win advanced them to the finals, - Read More Via e-Edition
